Winter at Christ Church Community Museum
Although Christ Church Community Museum closed on Labour Day for the winter season, the Committee continues to be active, holding meetings, fund-raising, and looking forward to celebrating the Christmas season.

The community celebrated its annual tree lighting service on Sunday, December 4.  Every year, this event heralds the coming of the Christmas season and recalls the beauty of the simpler pleasures of years long ago.

In November, volunteers gathered to create beautiful evergreen arrangements using dried plants, flowers and berries, sprays of juniper, cedar, spruce, pine and sumac. All 35 arrangements were pre-sold and netted the Church Museum $1,350. Although the evergreen trees on the McMullen and Graham farms are now somewhat denuded, most of the materials were found in gardens and "in the wild" in true pioneer fashion.

Plans to rebuild the original vestry on the north side of the Church continue. In the coming year, we hope to have all the building permits, authorizations, and sufficient funds to get this project underway. It is an ambitious undertaking that will see the 1853 Church restored to its original architectural configuration. We continue to ask for donations to reach the necessary funding to complete this historic project.

Christ Church Burial Grounds (1855-1886)

When we stand in the graveyard at Christ Church we can see a row of four small tombstones with a cross on top. On closer examination we see by the fading inscriptions on the stones that they tell a story of very early days in Lakefield in the late 1800's when life was harsh. These four tombstones mark the graves of four young children.

Christ Church Community Museum

The Christ Church Community Museum Committee was formed in 1997 with a mandate to restore Christ Church (as the building had deteriorated badly), expand its small museum beyond the Strickland family era, and to restore the 1855 Christ Church burial ground.  Many volunteers from St. John’s and the community have helped to achieve this goal by acting as museum guides, doing research for historical displays and educational programs, creating historical displays, organizing fundraising events and carrying out the ongoing restoration work.
