Don’t Just Come to Church, Serve The Church

Churches are run by clergy, but they’re kept alive by their congregations. In every parish there’s a core group of volunteers who step up and share their time and talents.

But these dedicated parishioners can’t do everything. They need your help.

There are always jobs going at St John’s. Whatever your age, ability or interests, we can find a way for you to contribute to the life of the church, serving our congregation and helping us grow and thrive.

Volunteering is rewarding in so many ways. Firstly - and most importantly - it’s a way to live out God’s call to serve. St Paul said it best when he gently admonished the Corinithians, “we were all baptised by one spirit so as to form one body” and urged them to share their gifts in support of their fledgling church.

Almost 2,000 years later, the church is better established but no less needy. Every parish in every age has relied on its people to serve not just their communities, but also each other.

Volunteering is a way to actively love our neighbour, but it’s not just a win for others. When we help each other, we also help ourselves - learning new skills, making new friends, gaining experience, finding purpose. It nourishes our soul and our spiritual practice.

It doesn’t matter whether you give St John’s a few minutes or a few hours a week, every little helps. Here’s some suggestions if you’re wondering what you can offer:

  • Reading scriptures during the Sunday service

  • Serving Communion wine

  • Counting the Offertory

  • Being a sidesperson

  • Decorating the church for events

  • Baking treats for refreshments after the service

  • Serving coffee

  • Helping tidy up in the kitchen

  • Knitting or quilting as part of our fundraising efforts

  • Assisting at the food bank

  • Playing piano during service

We’re also looking for someone to manage our children’s area at the front of the church. This would involve making sure there are appropriate toys, switching up the books, cleaning supplies after use. It’s a great way to help the younger members of the congregation feel welcome and play a part in growing our children’s ministry!

St John’s isn’t a building or a service. It’s a living body. At every service, every event, every meeting there are dedicated volunteers working to make it a success. If you’d like to be one of those people, contact stjohnslakefieldcomms@gmail.com to get started!
