Dust off Your Knitting Needles, Grab Your Crochet Hooks - Knitvember’s Back!

Last year’s Knitvember Challenge saw us donate six large boxes stuffed with handmade scarves, hats, mittens and gloves to One City Peterborough for distribution among those in need on our streets. It was a great success, thanks to the many crafters in our congregation and community who participated. If you didn’t get a chance to take part last year, don’t worry - we’re doing it all over again!

The only difference is that this year we’re giving a little closer to home. Our upcoming Knitvember will support the Lakefield Baptist Church’s Street Ministry program and we’re really excited to contribute to their amazing work. So if you’re finding the darkening fall evenings tough, need a new project, or simply want to do some good this winter, please consider joining us in this effort. Even if you can only manage one scarf, every item helps keep someone warm.

How it works

Step One: Knit (or crochet) as many winter accessories as you can between now and the end of November (if you’re a member of a knitting group, get them involved too!)

Step Two: Drop your creations off at St John’s Anglican Church, Lakefield by Monday 30 November. Donations can be made Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday mornings. Just drop them in the marked bin in the Regent Street entryway. If you can’t get to the church, email admin@stjohnslakefield.ca to arrange pick-up.

Step Three: We give them to the street ministry team at the Lakefield Baptist Church who will distribute them among those in need.

It’s that easy!

Tips for Success

  • Grab free patterns for hats, scarves, gloves and more at the Yarnspiration website here. Patterns are suitable for all levels, from beginner to advanced.

  • There are more great, free, beginner patterns at gina-michele.com. Check out these Easy Flat Mittens, Seed Stitch Scarf, or Basic Gloves.

  • If you’re low on yarn, check out your local library or thrift store to replenish your stash without breaking the bank

  • Choose a chunky yarn - these knit up really quickly so you can power through small items like hats, gloves, and socks

  • Feeling uninspired? Form a knitting club with some crafty friends and knit together

  • Spread the word to all your knitting and crocheting friends - the more the merrier!
