Take the ‘Knitvember’ Challenge!

Can you knit?

How about crocheting?

Do you want to help your community?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any or all of the above, welcome to Knitvember.

This November, we’re asking all knitters and crocheters to make items for those in need in our community. The cold weather is coming and there are a lot of people struggling on our streets. A homemade pair of mittens or a hand knit scarf can help spread a little love, warmth, and happiness to our neighbours.

While you’re watching the nights draw in and the holidays creep closer, please consider taking a moment to get your knitting needles (or your crochet hooks!) out. You get to go to your hobby happy place, use up your yarn stash, and give to a great cause. It’s a triple win!

How it works

Step One: Knit (or crochet) as many winter accessories* as you can during the month of November (if you’re a member of a knitting group, get them involved too!)

Step Two: Drop your creations off at St John’s Anglican Church, Lakefield by November 30th.

Step Three: We give them to One City Peterborough who will distribute them among those in need.

It’s that easy!

*Feel free to get as creative as you wish. We’ll take

  • Hats

  • Mittens

  • Scarves

  • Socks

  • Shawls

Please note that we can’t accept full items of clothing so no sweaters, cardigans etc.

Tips for Success

  • Grab free patterns for hats, scarves, gloves and more at the Yarnspiration website here. Patterns are suitable for all levels, from beginner to advanced.

  • There are more great, free, beginner patterns at gina-michele.com. Check out these Easy Flat Mittens, Seed Stitch Scarf, or Basic Gloves.

  • If you’re low on yarn, check out your local library or thrift store to replenish your stash without breaking the bank

  • Choose a chunky yarn - these knit up really quickly so you can power through small items like hats, gloves, and socks

  • Feeling uninspired? Form a knitting club with some crafty friends and knit together

  • Spread the word to all your knitting and crocheting friends - the more the merrier!
